Occasionally, we all like to let our hair down and enjoy a fun night out with friends, however, it’s easy to overdo it and end up with that awful hungover feeling the next day! When you get that feeling, it’s hard to pull yourself from the comfort of your bed and every movement is filled with pain, but there is an alternative! Here are 10 easy ways to take back your day and stay productive, even when you feel like you might never touch a drop of alcohol again…
While a lot can be said for eating before you drink and never drinking on an empty stomach, once the damage has been done, you might be put off at the thought of food. However, eating is one of the best ways to bring yourself back to normal and food will help to flush the toxins from your body. You won’t want to go heavy, though, and should consider a healthy platter of eggs and veggies such as kale, tomato and broccoli.
2. Get Your Hydration On
Alcohol is known to dehydrate you so make sure to drink plenty of water when you wake up to rehydrate and make yourself feel human again! A good habit to form is drinking water between your alcoholic drinks and ending the night with at least half a pint to refresh you before you go to sleep. Keep drinking water throughout the day and flush all the leftover impurities from your body.
3. Get Moving and Sweat it Out
The first few steps might not be so easy but it’s important to get moving, start your heart pumping and sweat out the nasty feeling left over from drinking too much. You don’t have to go intense; a brisk jog or a short session of yoga followed by a hot shower can do wonders for your body and mind.
4. Eat Healthily Throughout the Day
You’ll probably want to reach for unhealthy snacks like bread, chocolate and fried snacks, but try to hold off on adding more nasty stuff to your digestive system. Keep it light and choose detoxifying foods like carrots, grapefruit, and cauliflower. Avocado is also a favourite hangover cure and can be mixed up with plenty of tasty treats.
5. Antacids Will Soothe A Restless Stomach
If you are someone who gets bloated or suffers from stomachache after a night of drinking, taking an Antacid like Rennie or Alka-Seltzer is a quick way to settle your tummy and make it easier to eat some plain food like toast or biscuits.
6. It’s Okay to Nap
Drinking is tiring business and when you wake up feeling groggy in the morning or get hit with a crash later on in the day, it’s okay to have a lie in or take a cat nap. Alcohol can disturb our sleep making for a restless night, so if you’ve got a to-do list for the day ahead, try your best to get through it quickly and treat yourself to an early night.
7. Get Outside
Taking yourself outdoors for a stroll can do wonders for the body. Increased oxygen helps alcohol break down so there’s no excuse not to get outdoors and smell the flowers! Even taking your yoga session outdoors can help you feel better, so get out in the garden and enjoy the fresh air.
8. Take the Right Painkillers
When reaching for pain relief, avoid aspirin as it can further upset a restless stomach and make you feel worse. Instead, opt for paracetamol-based painkillers which offer faster absorption and with added codeine, offer the bonus of two painkillers in one.
Wallowing in pity on the sofa won’t make you feel better and can make you feel worse when you focus on the things that are making you feel rough. Keep busy and active, whether it’s going outside, completing a jigsaw puzzle, playing a video game… Anything to distract you from the hangover symptoms!
10. Turn to Bananas
When you find yourself needing an extra boost, bananas are the way forward. When you are dehydrated you lose potassium, which, luckily, bananas are packed with. While you don’t want to overdo it, a couple of bananas and some toast will set you right as rain after a heavy night.
There’s definitely no harm in enjoying a drink every now and then but it’s always best to be sensible and avoid overdoing it! Make sure to drink water throughout the evening and don’t start drinking until you’ve had a good healthy meal to line your stomach. Most importantly, stay productive and enjoy yourself!
