Are you feeling happy or not happy with life? We all have days when everyone else seems to be living without a care in the world. As we struggle with the ups and downs that life throws our way, friends, family and even strangers on the train appear more content than we are. Whether it’s self-esteem issues, worries at work or in a relationship, it seems that the grass is always greener for others.

It’s easy to see why we think everyone’s having a better time than us. Take Instagram for example. You’re bombarded with everyone else’s highlight reel. With TMI relationship posts, holiday snaps and perfect bodies galore, it’s no wonder we can feel like we are the only ones with problems. If what you’re doing doesn’t quite seem to quite ‘match up’ with the fun that everyone else is having, it can lead to you feeling inadequate.

#1 Reason : Unfair measurements

It can be a struggle – I’ve personally dealt with this for years, and often still do. Looking around a room wondering why I don’t feel as carefree as everyone looks. Feeling uncomfortable in my own skin when it seems that everyone else seems as confident as can be.

It’s not until I began opening up to close friends about how I felt that I realised that everyone has their own hang ups. A friend of mine gave me a great piece of advice that I try to use as my mantra: ‘No one is scrutinising every move you make’.

So, are we making ourselves unhappy by unfairly measuring ourselves against the happy façade of others? Are we really happier than we realise?

#2 Reason : Worry about other people

There’s a danger to always worrying about other people. Instead of being the best ‘you’ that you can be, you’re wasting your time trying to emulate others. This is truly a waste of the really brilliant person you are. Your perception of happiness is skewed because you are beginning to place other people’s perception of happiness ahead of yours. This is how you can find yourself in a never-ending spiral of misery.

Do things that make only you happy and everything else will fall into place. Life should be about doing the things that are enjoyable to you. There is no need for you to be out there to impress other people. It sounds simple, but we always forget: if they don’t like you for who you are then they weren’t meant to be your friends anyway.

Life isn’t always going to be some amazing, easy ride where you get everything that you want. Don’t take the little things for granted, they are just like little gifts throughout the day that you must appreciate if you want to live a happy and meaningful life. If you are not happy with life and really want to change your life, it’s because you love it enough to want more, and because you love yourself enough to want better. Don’t forget that.
