Drowning In New Year’s Resolutions?

Christmas is over for another year. The presents have been unwrapped, the dinner’s been eaten and it’s time to begin a new year. Traditionally, many people make New Year’s Resolutions on the 1st January. Perhaps seeing a new year as a blank slate, or fresh start, common resolutions are to lose weight, go to the gym, earn more money, or simply to drink more water and less wine!

However positive you may feel on January 1st, you could end up feeling a whole lot worse if you find yourself unable to stick to your resolutions. The truth is, many resolutions made at this time of year are unrealistic and can have a negative impact on you.

Here’s why you shouldn’t make any this year.

Oh god, the pressure!

A lot of people make grand resolutions and end up breaking them almost immediately. In fact, 80% of resolutions fail before February! This perceived ‘failure’ can perpetuate not feeling good enough, which is hugely negative and certainly not the way to go about achieving goals.

What’s changed?

If you haven’t managed to achieve something before, why can you now? What’s changed? Maybe you think that THIS will be the year that you lose that extra stone you’ve been meaning to lose for the last three years? The reality is that there’s no point in setting the same resolutions you’ve been setting for years on end, only to feel disappointed and down on yourself. If you are only making a resolution because it’s that time of year again, that just isn’t good enough.

Bad timing

January is MISERABLE. Did you know it’s the most depressing month of the year? It’s a horrible time to be setting yourself big resolutions and long-term goals. It’s cold and nasty enough without trying to force yourself not to have a piece of cake or to go out for a long run in a blizzard for your brand-new health kick.

Make goals, not resolutions

Instead of grand resolutions on 1st January, why not focus on the short-term and make several smaller goals throughout the year? After all, small changes make a big one. Short-term goals create happier, less stressful lives and can take the weight of big goals off your shoulders.

In any case, you shouldn’t beat yourself up. Try to congratulate and energise yourself for making efforts towards your goals. A positive mindset is the right way to achieve anything.
