We interviewed Green Queen founder, Sonalie Figueiras on why she doesn’t suffer from Monday Blues anymore and her tips on staying productive and inspired throughout the week…

Beating the Monday Blues

‛The reality is that probably not everyone loves their job. Monday represents going back to the drudgery, i.e., being in the office and having to do a lot of work. Most people might feel depressed, but definitely not me. I really do love Mondays. I’m very excited to go to work. Actually, this is how I feel on most days. I think what excites me is to just have a vision for the upcoming week in my mind on a Sunday night, like a run-through the major thing that I’m going to do. I like to look at my calendar and go, “Okay, what’s on this week?” So, I can just slot everything in my head. I do think that it really helps me to be ready mentally.’

‛Another thing that I think helps is to make sure you’ve done something different on the weekend. It may be a hike, a brunch with your friends or spending time with your kid, which is slightly different than how you spend time on a weekend. The reason is that I feel like on Monday, I like knowing that I did something enjoyable during the weekend. It really makes me feel like, “Okay, I didn’t just do nothing,” and that helps too.’

7: 30 A.M. – Start My Morning

‛I’m not a huge morning person. I wake up between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. I’m not proud to say that but I do spend maybe 5 to 10 minutes going through my phone, to have a quick overview of my emails in case there is something urgent. And then, I like to look at the news. I’m a big news junkie. A little bit of reading before the day really starts.’

7: 45 A.M. – A Plant-Based Diet That Keeps My Skin Glowing

‛Honestly, having a plant-based diet helps me stay youthful.  It’s probably the number one way to keep my skin really bright. I’m like a vegetarian. My diet doesn’t have either dairy products or eggs. I really like eating beans, nuts, seeds and grains. I think my skin has something to do with my diet. (Laughs) I think most people really don’t get enough fiber, minerals and vitamins in their diet. No supplement can account for a full diet. I find that Heather’s Organic Fennel Tea is really good for my digestive system. I just love it!’

‛But in terms of my skin-care products, I always have the Be genki Corrective Beauty Toner in my bag. For me, it’s like a face mist. It is very refreshing and that helps to hydrate my skin. I also love to use Mood Deodorant Stick because firstly it’s a zero-waste product and secondly it is made with very conscious ingredients, such as coconut oil from Soloman Island and essential oils. So, no nasty ingredients can go under your armpit.’

8:00 A.M. – Mini Family Time with My Baby Boy

‛For me, my kind of meaningful morning is to have a little bit of time to play with my baby; maybe feed him his breakfast. I think becoming a mom pulls you into a different kind of vibe. Before, it was always work, work and only work. I was always thinking about work. But now, everything has shifted since I had my baby and adopted a really cute puppy. She’s a little Pomeranian, she’s really cute and she sleeps with us. When I wake up, there’s always a really cute dog to give breakfast to and a really sweet baby to talk to. So this always pulls me away from being only a workaholic. It’s like I just go into my domestic bubble and then come back after 20 or 30 minutes later to get my work mode ready.’

8:30 A.M. – Just Coffee to Get Through the Morning

‛I don’t usually eat breakfast in the morning. I only start getting hungry around 12:00 or 1:00 p.m. Thus at 8:00 a.m. in the morning, all I really want is coffee or Matcha latte. Sometimes, I will do it myself. I’ve become a little bit naughty lately because there’s a Starbucks right next to my new office, and now Starbucks does the pure Matcha latte without any sugar in it. It’s so perfect! So, I just bring my cup and add ice to it. I love a good iced coffee. I’m a big iced coffee drinker in the morning. Sometimes, I feel like I’d rather spend as much time with my son and just play with him than spend time preparing my breakfast and sort myself out. This is why I’ve just been getting coffee right before I get to work, just to spend more time with my son.’

9:00 A.M. – Stay Focused on the Bigger Picture of Green Queen

‛I think my challenge in Green Queen always is not having enough time because there’s always so much more I want to do. I’m in a perpetual state of “There’s so much more I want to do,” so I have to learn to turn that voice off and accept what is possible. Otherwise, I could never stop working. I have just now learned how to calculate return on investment and file return on time. I am a strong believer in data. And, I have to be just very focused on the vision. Solely, my vision is to generate the best content on the website and to publish it as fast as possible. That’s it. Everything else has to always come second to that.’

‘So, what I think is very important is to discipline yourself in terms of your focus. I’ve noticed that the biggest problem faced by the people is not having a focus.’

Sonalie Figueiras, Founder & Editor-in-Chief, Green Queen

‛We’ve become a culture that is really fixated on start-ups and running your own business and being a founder, but we’re not good at showing people the reality. So, what I think is very important is to discipline yourself in terms of your focus. I’ve noticed that the biggest problem faced by the people is not having a focus. Luckily, I really am good at focusing! When I come to the office, I tend to be pulled in many directions. I just have to be very comfortable in the chaos of the office because I’ve got all my team members who need me for various reasons. So, my problem is making sure that I’m clear on what needs to be done today and it’s non-negotiable. And just making sure that when I need a moment then I say to my team, “Okay, now I need to focus on this, so I’ll talk to you guys later because I need to finish this.” I am very clear every day as to what has to be done by the end of that day; some might be a nice-to-have kind of work, but others might be what must- be-done kind of work.’

10:30 A.M. – 5 Green Rules at Green Queen Media’s Office

‛To build an environmentally friendly office at Green Queen, we have a few green tips for that. For example, we’re trying to grow a plant at the office. The number one choice of a plant by NASA is a snake plant, as it can suck pollution and toxins from indoor air. We also try not to put on the air-conditioning that much and try to keep a very nice and clean environment as much as possible as well. I believe if the spaces are more minimalist and cleaner then it can make you feel better mentally and lighter emotionally.’

‛On top of that, we try to encourage everyone at Green Queen to have a green Monday if possible. Every fruit and tea bag that our colleagues bring to the office to share is very zero waste. We’re very anti-plastic and anti-paper, so that’s why we don’t even have a printer at the office. We do love to write stuff on our notebooks as it helps you to remember. All the notebooks we use are not made from plastics, and the FSC paper is all recycled and we’ll definitely keep recycling them. This is how we build a green office environment.’
