What’s better than keeping a consistent productivity on a Monday? Tobe Fong, co-founder of Craftsman Co talks with us why we shouldn’t feel anxious and his secrets for a productive Monday…

Beating the Monday Blues

“I do all the planning for the week ahead on Sunday. So, I don’t feel depressed or anxious on Monday. Most likely, I and my partner, TC, are just like – we can’t wait to get back to work every Sunday. I truly think that if you’re doing something what you love, you won’t necessarily feel like you are working at all, especially on a Monday. As long as you’re progressing and there’s growth on your journey, you’re doing good.”

“I get up naturally around the same time every day actually, between 6 and 7. I don’t set an alarm clock; hence I tend to go to bed every night between 11 to 12. This is my consistent rhythm from Monday to Sunday.”

6:45 A.M. – Supplements before Breakfast

“I take my supplements soon after I wake up. I take tons of supplements that I even think borders on the ridiculous. Every time I go traveling, I need a box, like Monday, Tuesday – that kind of box – to carry my supplements. I really do need that box. Otherwise, I can’t bring everything.”

“So, I take Jarrow Formulas Methyl B-12 for my energy. I think a lot of people living in the city are very low on vitamin B, since all the stress tends to lower your vitamin B. Then, you feel more exhausted and even more stressed. Hence, I really need it to support my energy levels. What do I do if I get stressed? I meditate, just inhale and exhale. But there’s also a supplement called L-Theanine. It can be found in green-tea; it has caffeine and L-Theanine, which is why it can lower stress level and gives you the energy, albeit with a calming effect. I always take Doctor’s Best L-Theanine with my coffee.”

“But what time do I have my breakfast? It really depends, because if I am doing weight training, I will have breakfast before that. However, I will have my breakfast afterwards if I am doing cardio training. For breakfast, I normally have toast, eggs and some protein like meat every morning. But when I was in college, I used to be really strict about my diet. I was on an extreme diet – Ketogenic diet that only allows you to eat high fat and protein with literally no carbs. I was really grumpy all the time at that point in time. I was not the person people want to be around with because I was always hungry.” (Laughs)

7:00 A.M. – Training Session

“I go to Goji Studios in Tsim Sha Shui every morning. My weeks are divided between four days of weight training and three days of cardio. For cardio days, I do at the highest incline and speeds around 4.5km/hr. It sounds a bit slow, but you will surely sweat for an hour and burn around 600 calories. It’s pretty good.”

“I don’t have a mentor yet, so these guys are my imaginary mentors.”

“Normally, when I am doing treadmill, I also listen to audiobooks, so that I can learn something when burning calories. But I wasn’t like that a year ago. Last year was really big for me, because I completely changed my habits and surroundings for good. Your surroundings shape your future, right? For example, I listen to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks such as GaryVee, Grant Cardon or something that inspires you to become a better person, etc. I don’t have a mentor yet, so these guys are my imaginary mentors.” (Laughs)

8:00 A.M. – “Recovery Shower”

“After a long sweat session, I go home and take a cold shower, even during winters. This method is similar to Cryotherapy that top athletes will actually pay in order to get the treatment. The use of freezing temperatures accelerates muscles recovery. Cold shower has the same effect but is much cheaper.”

“Honestly, I didn’t feel good about it when I first started doing it, right? But now, I prepare myself first and then jump into cold shower for 5 minutes. It really wakes my body up and keeps me focused throughout the day.”

8:15 A.M. – Get Changed

“On weekdays, I actually don’t think too much about what I will wear. I just wear a suit; I wear a lot of suits. I basically keep rotating from different suits with different polo, so that I don’t have to spend time thinking about what I am going to wear. This style of living reminds me of Steve Jobs, but I think I am far from that point since I don’t want to wear the same turtleneck, jeans and sneakers either. I still want to look good, right?”

“For men, wearing suit makes you feel powerful in a special way. I mean, you never know who you’re going to run into, especially in my industry. I have to wear something sartorial that can actually represent my brand. This is why I don’t even wear shirts or ties; I just wear suit with a polo-shirts, maybe a t-shirt and then a pair of classic loafers. That’s it.”

9:00 A.M. – Ready to Work

“A year ago, I used to have to-do lists on my iPhone’s notes, but I figured out that’s not really productive. So, what I do now is to use the time blocking method on my calendar. Let’s say I have to finalize a brand presentation with my partner from 9 to 10; I will block an hour for that. It really helps with boosting the productivity and effectively managing my time. This is what I normally do at work.”
