Remember a couple of years ago when the internet was in uproar because Gwyneth Paltrow began selling Jade Eggs on Goop? As well as a candle that ‘smelled like her vagina’, there were a few things in her store that were a little confusing to the uninitiated. But now, there is a growing group of women on the internet, especially on Instagram, who are extolling the virtues of ‘sex magic’ and feminine sexual energy using things like Yoni Eggs and Yoni Steaming as their tools.
So what’s the idea with this corner of the internet, and the sexual practises that go along with it? We looked into this a little deeper to educate ourselves and you in the process.
What Are Yoni Eggs?
Yoni Eggs are, as you may have guessed, are shaped like eggs and are designed to be used for vaginal insertion. They are made from jade – à la Gwenyth – but can be made from other materials such as clear quartz, amethyst, banded onyx. The crystals used are believed to emit their own vibrational healing energy or frequency, so you choose your yoni egg depending on your intention. For example, rose quartz for love, black obsidian for grounding. The eggs are believed to be Chinese in origin, used by concubines of the emperor for youth, sexual prowess and vitality.
A Yoni Egg is meant to be worn inside the vagina for anywhere from a few minutes to overnight and ideally, every day.
What Are The Benefits of Wearing A Yoni Egg?
Yoni Egg wearers claim the benefits are both physical and spiritual! See below for some of the purported benefits of wearing a Yoni Egg.
- Increased libido and awakened sensuality.
- Increased natural lubrication
- Develop an intimate and loving relationship with your yoni, your entire body, and ultimately yourself
- Increased sensitivity during intercourse.
- Become much more orgasmic.
- Enhance your yoga practice.
- Some women that use yoni eggs report a reduction of PMS symptoms and menstrual cramps .
- Improve overall health and wellbeing
Sounds great, right? Why don’t all women use them, all the time? While some women swear by them, there are also some things to consider when thinking about using a Yoni Egg.
Are There Any Dangers?
Potentially. There is NO backed research and no evidence that using a Yoni Egg benefits the body in any way, shape or form. This is one of the reasons that Gwenyth Paltrow got in so much trouble (and sued!) over her now-deleted Jade Egg blog post. Basically, use at your own risk.
There is a lot of scepticism around whether these eggs are a marketing myth, sold to women without much to back it up.
The suggested dangers of wearing a Yoni Egg are as follows:
- Increased risk of infection due to porous materials used
- Pelvic floor tension
- Irritation or scratching of the vaginal wall (ouch!)
- Increased risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS)
- Prolonged insertion can also prevent your body’s natural secretions from properly draining
Using Yoni Eggs are especially risky for women who are pregnant, menstruating, have a urinary tract infection or some kind of pre-existing pelvic condition.
So, you must consider these potential risks, even if you’re attracted to the supposed benefits!
To Wear a Yoni Egg or Not?
You need to go into Yoni Egg practise with your eyes wide open, and not until you’ve done your thorough research. I admit, I am intrigued by the practise and follow so many amazing women who can’t speak more highly of the eggs. However, I am concerned by the risks. If you do decide to wear an egg, just be aware of the potential harm. You may become a person who absolutely loves their Yoni Egg, wanting to share them with the world, but on the other hand, you may face consequences.
A good way to gain some of the benefits is to simply do some kegel exercises. These are simple exercises you can do *right now* with no tools. The best way to describe how to do it is to imagine you’re peeing, and use the muscle that would stop the pee coming out. Do it over and over. That’s a kegel exercise! This has been proven to strengthen your pelvic floor and can lead to stronger orgasms!
